About Convert.rest
Convert.rest is a free Word ⇄ PDF converter built on a radical premise: your documents are none of our business. Every conversion runs entirely in your browser — no uploads, no servers, no accounts.
Our mission
We believe document conversion should be a utility — like a ruler or a spell checker — not a business built on harvesting your files. Convert.rest exists to prove that private, unlimited and free conversion can be the default, not the premium, and that a tool which promises both privacy and convenience does not have to trade one against the other.
What Convert.rest is
An in-browser converter for both directions of the most common document workflow: Word to PDF and PDF back to Word. DOC, DOCX, RTF and ODT files become polished PDFs; text-based PDFs become fully editable DOCX files. Batch mode converts up to twenty files in one pass, with individual downloads or a single ZIP archive.
Everything runs through WebAssembly directly in your browser tab. There is no backend to throttle you, no queue to wait in and no account system — the entire converter is the page you are already on.
What makes it different
Upload-based converters must fund expensive server fleets, which is why they cap free use with watermarks, quotas and premium tiers. Because Convert.rest has no conversion servers, the whole business logic disappears: the lack of limits is not a pricing decision, it is an engineering impossibility. A connector to a server simply does not exist.
Why client-side conversion matters
Most online converters upload your document to a server, process it there, and then promise to delete it. We designed Convert.rest so that there is nothing to delete: the conversion engine — built on Mammoth, PDF.js, pdf-lib and the DOCX libraries — executes locally in your browser tab. Contracts, invoices and confidential reports never leave your device.
The technology
The engine builds on mature open-source libraries — Mammoth for DOCX parsing, PDF.js to decode PDFs, pdf-lib for PDF generation and the DOCX ecosystem for editing output — compiled to run entirely client-side. Your hardware does the work, your browser is the only runtime, and your files stay where they belong.
Our principles
Private by design. Free for everyone. Honest about limitations — we do not claim support we have not shipped, and we list known limits openly on the converter pages. That discipline guides every release and every answer we write in the guides and FAQ.
How is it free?
Because we have no conversion servers to run, our operating costs are a fraction of a classic converter site. There are no premium tiers, no watermarks, no daily quotas and no account walls — just a fast, private tool.
Why you can trust it
There is nothing to trust — that is the point. No server, no upload, no storage means there is no data to lose, leak or subpoena. The privacy policy and the terms of service are not about protecting us from you; they document a technical reality that protects you from everyone.

What’s next
Scanned-PDF-to-Word via in-browser OCR (Tesseract.js), a Web Worker pipeline for very large files, and PDF/A archival export. Privacy-first will remain the non-negotiable core.
