PDF to Markdown — Convert PDF to Markdown Online

Turn a text-based PDF into structured Markdown in seconds. Page order is rebuilt, likely headings become heading marks, and bold text stays emphasized — all inside this tab, with no upload.

Select a PDF with a text layeror click to browseConverted locally in this tab — nothing is uploaded.

This tool runs entirely in your browser — your files and text never leave this tab.

The PDF is opened and read locally with an in-browser PDF engine. No bytes of the file leave your device — there is no upload endpoint on this page.

Supported formats

  • Output: Markdown with reading-order text, detected headings and bold emphasis.
  • Each page is converted in order and separated by a blank line.

What this tool does

Text items are extracted page by page, grouped into lines in reading order (top to bottom, left to right), and then rewritten as Markdown. Runs rendered significantly larger than body text become headings, bold runs are wrapped in emphasis, and paragraphs are separated by blank lines so the result flows like a document rather than a dump.

Who it is for

Researchers turning papers into notes, teams importing legacy PDF documentation into a Markdown wiki, writers republishing old releases as articles, and analysts who need a text copy they can edit — without uploading the PDF.

When a PDF has no text

A scanned PDF stores pictures of pages, not text. The converter detects that there is nothing extractable and shows a clear message instead of producing an empty or nonsense file. Run the PDF through OCR first (or use a digital PDF) and convert again.

Fidelity expectations

Reading order and the big structure survive: paragraphs, headings, and bold look right in most documents. Strict visual layout does not — Markdown is linear, so tables drawn with graphics or multi-column magazine pages are linearized rather than reconstructed.

Limitations

  • Scanned PDFs without a text layer convert to nothing extractable — the tool reports them instead of guessing.
  • Column-heavy layouts are linearized into reading order, which may not match the visual columns exactly.
  • Complex multi-level numbered lists are converted as text; they are not re-created as Markdown list markup.

Frequently asked questions

Scanned PDFs contain images, not text. There is nothing to extract, so the tool reports the PDF as text-less instead of returning an empty file. OCR the pages first and the converted PDF will work.
