Word to Markdown — Convert DOCX to Markdown Online

Turn a Word .docx document into clean, GitHub-flavored Markdown in seconds. Drop the file, press convert, and copy or download the result — the conversion runs entirely in this tab, so nothing is uploaded.

Drop a Word document (.docx)or click to browseConverted locally in this tab — nothing is uploaded.

This tool runs entirely in your browser — your files and text never leave this tab.

The document is decompressed and parsed locally with an in-browser Word parser. No file bytes, filename or text ever leave this page — there is no upload endpoint and no telemetry carrying your content.

Supported formats

  • Input: Word .docx files only (up to 50 MB). Layout-heavy documents keep their visible text order.
  • Output: GFM Markdown — ATX headings, fenced code blocks, tables, lists and links.
  • Copy to clipboard or download the result as a .md file.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add your .docx file

Drop the document onto the box or use the file picker. Only .docx is accepted.

  2. 2

    Convert it

Click Convert. The document is parsed entirely in your browser — no upload.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

Copy the Markdown with one click or download it as a .md file.

What this tool does

The converter reads the .docx package, extracts the document with the same parser used by a Word-to-HTML pipeline, and rewrites the content as GitHub-flavored Markdown. Headings become ATX headings, paragraphs stay paragraphs, lists become dash lists, and tables become pipe tables, so the Markdown reads naturally in any editor, repository or notes app.

Who it is for

Technical writers moving documentation from Word to a wiki, developers importing specs into a repository README, researchers converting reports into note-taking apps, and anyone who needs an editable Markdown copy of a document — without sending it to a third-party conversion service.

What carries over

Bold, italic, links, headings, ordered and unordered lists, code, and simple tables are preserved. Useful heading styles and paragraph structure survive, which keeps the Markdown outline close to the original document. Fancy layout tricks, images and page geometry do not — Markdown is a text format, not a page-description format.

Privacy and file size

Everything happens in the browser: the zip container is opened in memory, text is extracted with local code, and the Markdown is produced on the spot. The 50 MB limit and the .docx-only check are enforced before conversion starts, and the file is discarded when the page closes.

Limitations

  • Legacy binary .doc files are not supported — save the file as .docx in Word first.
  • Comments and tracked changes are not included in the Markdown output.
  • Scanned pages with no editable text layer convert to the visible text only; images are not extracted as attachments.

Frequently asked questions

No. Legacy binary .doc files cannot be read client-side with acceptable fidelity. Save the document as .docx in Word first (File > Save As > Word Document), then convert the .docx.
