If you can select and copy text in your PDF, it is text-based and will convert cleanly. Scanned PDFs are images and need OCR (planned in a future update).

Understand what converts well
Headings, paragraphs, bullet and numbered lists, simple tables and text styles convert reliably and keep their meaning in Word. Complex arrangements — layered images, floating text boxes, multi-column newspaper styling — are handled on a best-effort basis: the text arrives, but the arrangement may need manual reconstruction. The plainer the source, the cleaner the result, and the output is always an editable DOCX you can open in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice.
Work safely with the original
Because the PDF never leaves your browser during conversion, the original stays exactly where you placed it. Keep it open next to your editor as a reference while you review the converted file, and only trust the new document after a quick read-through. Nothing on Convert.rest uploads, logs or stores your files, so even contracts with sensitive clauses are safe to convert here.
Speed up the cleanup
A few habits turn conversion cleanup into minutes rather than hours. Apply Word built-in styles to headings instead of manual bold formatting, fix stray blank lines with a single replace, and rebuild complex tables using the PDF as a visual template. Whatever did not survive conversion stays visible in the original PDF, ready to copy over.
When you need OCR-like output
Scanned, image-only PDFs cannot produce editable text without optical character recognition. OCR is on the roadmap; until it ships, run the scan through any OCR tool and then convert the resulting text-based PDF here. Either way, the editing document you finish with is produced entirely on your device — no document data ever travels to a server.
